Kurt Dumps Tobi

Over the years, Nirvana lore had it that Cobain started using heroin because Vail dumped him. The truth is less romantic—Kurt actually broke it off with her that October, but not before she threated to stop seeing him because of his drug use.

Still, based on the songs that he wrote and continued to revise around the time of their unraveling, he certainly made it seem as if she was the heartbreaker. The material from this era is pained, be it the lovesick lines of “Aneurysm” or the angst of “Teen Spirit.” Another number, “Drain You”—initially titled “Formula”—was a somberly sung expression of gratitude, while “Lounge Act” was a song about denial—Cobain’s way of coping with the heartache he brought about.

In the days and weeks after, Cobain would shut down around his bandmates, especially his housemate Grohl. The drummer became alarmed about this behavior until Kurt explained during one late-night ride home from rehearsal that he was basically in mourning, but that he was working his way past the sadness he had been feeling.
